Doha summit urged continued talks with Afghan rulers: Envoy

TEHRAN, Feb. 21 (MNA) – Iran's special envoy for Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qomi says a recent UN-led international conference on Afghanistan called on the international community to keep communicating with the ruling authorities in that country.

The Doha conference, which ended on Monday, outlined two primary objectives, first, the establishment of an international contact group for engaging with Kabul's ruling authorities, and second, the appointment of a UN special envoy to Afghanistan, Kazemi Qomi told IRNA.

He said that a regional contact group has already been established within the Moscow format and as recommended by Iran.

The Moscow format is a diplomatic platform established in 2017 to facilitate dialogue and cooperation between regional countries on the conflict in Afghanistan. The format takes its name from the Russian capital, Moscow, where the first meeting of the group was held.

Given that regional countries play the most critical role in ensuring the stability and security of the region, Kazemi Qomi said, “The key point at the Doha summit was that the international community supports the regional initiative of the United Nations.”

He continued, “The new (UN) representative should be appointed from a place where he has the most familiarity and cooperation with Afghanistan.”
